Hero to a generation of younger artists, Joan Jonas is a pioneer of performance and video who has pushed the boundaries of art for the last five decades. In the early 1960s she developed her first Happenings, in which she employed the female body, either nude or clothed, as “sculptural material” in the space, carefully fragmenting and reflecting it in mirrors. In recent years, the environmental situation has become more and more important to me and visible in my work, due to the increasing threats to our livelihoods and that of numerous other species. Shown drawing in her Manhattan studio and performing on stage at the Umeå Jazz Festival in Sweden, Joan Jonas describes her approach to drawing and its role within her overall practice. Early works from the late 1960s are shown alongside recent installations dealing with topical themes such as climate change and extinction. In 2018 Tate Modern devoted to her a major survey exhibition, which then travelled to Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, Porto, Portugal. Jonas' projects and experiments provided the foundation on which much video performance art would be based.
