You need to add the bleach mixed water to the tank and then run the faucets so that water flows through the hose to the faucet. Stir the bleach into the water and let stand 30 minutes. Partially drain the fresh water tank so that it’s only half full. Chlorine as a purification and disinfection , chlorine is an important chemical for water purification (such as water treatment plants), in disinfectants, and in bleach. 3 full tanks of water through each fixture there is still a strong bleach odor and after washing your hands there is still a strong odor of bleach on your hands and in the air. The RV tank can hold at least 30 gallons of water, and that means that when a couple goes camping and they are using 6 gallons a day per person, the water in the tank will last for at least 3 days. What I do to dispose of the chlorinated water (a couple of times the concentration of chlorinated swimming pool water) is to stick my kitchen sink faucet (pull out kind) out the window and pump it onto the pavement where the chlorine evaporates very quickly. Once I had performed my usual water heater maintenance I buttoned it up leaving the tank empty. You can start by draining the water heater. The Actual Steps. Step 2.
These can usually be found at pool supply stores. A freshwater tank may last for a period of 2-3 days.
The following guide will enlighten you about how long to keep fresh water in the RV tank.
I filled a 7-gallon portable fresh water jug we carry for boondocking with the vinegar/water mix. After flushing the tank with the 500ppm bleach solution, then rinse with a 10ppm bleach solution (1 teaspoon bleach per 10 gallons of water). Fill the tank till it overflows (to clean everything), then run the pump and allow the bleach out of every tap for 5 or 10 seconds, then up th the low point drains for a few seconds to sanatize the valves. I add the bleach to the water hose, and use shore water (at the house) to push it into the tank. Drain and flush the fresh water tank; leave empty. Sanitize the funnel and hose by filling it with a mixture of chlorine bleach and water. The drain plug, or petcock is usually located in the bottom left hand corner. That way the hose is cleaned, as is the fill pipe, and the tank. Remember, the idea is to leave the bleach in the water heater and pipes overnight so it can do its work. So I made a major screw up and added like 12 cups of bleach to a 45 gal tank. A 50 gallon of tank will need around a 5 gallons of bleach solution (bleach added to water). Then, sucked the mixture into the RV water heater tank using the RV’s 12-volt water pump.
