Artificial swallow nests, boxes or platforms provide an inviting spot for the birds to build their nests. The shape of the box is not important, but the best have had an access tunnel with a slightly wider chamber at the end.

Alternative Bluebird Nest Box 2. You can use a round hole 1 1/2″ diameter entrance hole for this Bluebird House and it will also be used by Tree Swallows and the Titmouse. Tree Swallows benefit from a "fledgling ladder" inside the nest box, under the entrance hole. However, the following next box is best suited for them, and also work for any of the below bird species.
The tree swallow is a hole nester and often faces a housing shortage and must fight to get into sought-after nest sites. I was very disappointed when English Sparrows (aka House Sparrows) moved in and drove them away. Building a nesting place for barn swallows in your area is a simple process, but it's not the same as building a traditional birdhouse; because barn swallows dislike enclosed spaces, a nest cup or open nest box is far more effective.
