She pursued knowledge with great fervor and evidenced such genius that, in spite of scant formal education, she had achieved renkown as a gifted writer and thinker by adolescence. Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz was a self-taught scholar, writer, poetess, nun and a feminist philosopher belonging to a Mexico which was a part of the Spanish Empire.

In the 1600s, she defended her right to be an intellectual, suggesting that women should be educated and educators and accusing men of being the cause of the very ills they blamed on women. Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz was a poet and scholar whose work bridged the periods of the Spanish Golden Age Baroque and the Enlightenment, the locales of Spain and colonial Mexico, and the philosophies of Roman Catholicism and of scientific endeavour.
