Born on 12 November 1651, Sor Juana was an exceptionally bright child, and had learned to read by the age of three and had written her first poem at the age of eight. Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (English: Sister Joan Agnes of the Cross; born Juana Inés de Asbaje y Ramírez de Santillana; Mexico, 12 November 1651 – 17 April 1695), was a Hieronymite nun and self-taught Mexican scholar and poet. Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, the first great Latin American poet, is still considered one of the most important literary figures of the American Hemisphere, and one of the first feminist writers. She was known in her lifetime as “The Tenth Muse” of Mexico.
Juana Inés de Asbaje y Ramírez de Santillana was born in San Miguel Nepantla (now called Nepantla de Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz in her honor) near Mexico City.
She pursued knowledge with great fervor and evidenced such genius that, in spite of scant formal education, she had achieved renkown as a gifted writer and thinker by adolescence. Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz was a self-taught scholar, writer, poetess, nun and a feminist philosopher belonging to a Mexico which was a part of the Spanish Empire.
In the 1600s, she defended her right to be an intellectual, suggesting that women should be educated and educators and accusing men of being the cause of the very ills they blamed on women. Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz was a poet and scholar whose work bridged the periods of the Spanish Golden Age Baroque and the Enlightenment, the locales of Spain and colonial Mexico, and the philosophies of Roman Catholicism and of scientific endeavour.
