However, guided hikes to the fossil beds are available during the summer season through the Burgess Shale Geoscience Foundation and Parks Canada. The access to Walcott’s Quarry is along a strenuous 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) trail that gains 760 meters (2,500 feet) in elevation. With a maximum group of 12 people, there is plenty of opportunity to ask questions about geology or the local plants and animals. The slate and shale of the Stephen Formation are the gray layers, and this is where most of the fossils have been found. The fourth Secretary of the Smithsonian, Charles Doolittle Walcott, was a paleontologist noted for his discovery of the Burgess Shale fossils in Canada in the early twentieth century. The Walcott Quarry and trilobite bed on Mt. Burgess Shale and Walcott Quarry is a 13.7 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada that offers the chance to see wildlife and is rated as difficult. The Burgess Shale Geoscience Foundation (250/343-6006 or 800/343-3006, www.burgess-shale.bc.ca) guides trips to both sites between July and mid-September.
This group of fossils takes its name from the Burgess Shale rock formation, named by Walcott after nearby Mount Burgess in the Canadian Rockies.

The guide had just finished her degree in geology and was nice, however didn't provide much in the way of expertise and I found the other people on the hike, some of whom were geologists were much better at pointing out things and answering questions than the guide. A specialist on Cambrian trilobites and brachiopods, he published hundreds of papers during his long and successful career. For him the pressing urgency of description, not to mention his innumerable other commitments, never would allow him to reflect on what deeper implications this fauna might provide.
