Joan Jonas Mirror Check, 1970. In Joan Joans’ work Mirror Check, the female performer observes and examines her own naked body with a small, round hand-held mirror. Beginning in the late 1960s, Joan Jonas created a groundbreaking series of works that established her as one of the pioneering forces in body art, performance, and video art. The presentation of this artwork has been supported by Geoff Ainsworth. Joan Jonas was born in 1936 in New York. In her performance piece Mirror Check (1970), Jonas stood nude with a small, round mirror and examined details of her body looking into the entire time, seeing ‘a succession of places unfolding in time’, while the audience watched from a distance of thirty feet. In Mirror Check, 1970, for instance, Jonas appeared naked and examined every inch of her body with a hand mirror; but since the audience were positioned 25 feet away, they were un able to see these intimate revelations.
