is competitive cheerleading a sport

To prove these people wrong, this article will relate it to the fundamentals or essentials that make an activity a sport. At a typical cheerleading competition, teams perform a 2 and a half minute routine with music that includes stunts, jumps, tumbling.

Some debates just spark out of nowhere in order to annoy the party in question or because these people just believe that there is no athleticism in cheerleading. The debate of if cheerleading is really a sport gets into the skin of many who believe so. Although cheerleading wasn't always the sport it is today, it has morphed into a highly competitive sport combining gymnastics, dance and stunting.

There are thousands of schools across the country that have cheerleading, but very few consider it a sport. Teams are judged by a panel of cheerleading experts on difficulty and execution. The judge in the case ruled that they could not do this because competitive cheerleading isn’t a real sport. U.S. District judge Stefan Underhill said that competitive cheerleading is “too underdeveloped and disorganized” to be considered a sport so it can’t satisfy any gender requirements. Being a part of a team teaches kids how to work within a team.

Overall, I strongly believe that competitive cheerleading is a sport because of a large amount of training, the amount of skill that has to be implied, and the risk of injuries due to the amount of difficulty within the sport. Being an all-star cheerleader, nothing is more infuriating to me than being told that it is not a sport. The winner in each division gets a trophy and bragging rights. According to an article in The Atlantic , a federal court ruled in 2012 that schools could not sanction cheer squads as official athletic programs.

Not only are cheerleaders expected to be fit enough to perform at games for their school's sports teams (typically basketball and football), they often travel to competitions around the country geared specifically for cheer squads.

Like we said earlier, the debate about whether competitive cheer should be considered a sport or not has been going on for some time now. As a cheerleader myself, I would most definitely recommend … Cheerleading is a Sport. 17 of 50 states consider cheerleading a sport Competitive cheerleading is when cheer squads compete against each other at a competition. I would like to see a change in the way that people view cheerleading.
