However, the media often abdicates this responsibility and creates the darkness in which true democracy cannot flourish.
They should turn their attentions now and then to the places where the lights are going out. The American democracy will probably not “die” tomorrow, the media notwithstanding. The Washington Post was prescient in its resurrection of an old motto — Democracy Dies in Darkness — after the 2016 election. It should be the media’s responsibility to ensure that democracy does not die in darkness by bringing the light of true information to the public consciousness. In past decades, it was the media who shined a light on corruption and evil, but these days the darkness never felt more enveloping.
And not just one side will be the instrument of death, it takes two. The Washington Post and its cohorts are right that “democracy dies in darkness.” They should turn their attentions now and then to the places where the lights are going out.
